Philip Gröning
Born in 1959, Philip Gröning is one of the most distinctive voices in European art-house cinema. While studying at the University of Television and Film Munich, he founded his own production company in 1986.
Gröning first attracted international attention with “The Terrorists!” (1992) – a film about a planned attack on Helmut Kohl, which won the Bronze Leopard in Locarno and was screened at the Sundance Film Festival. He gained further recognition in 2000 with “L’amour, l’argent, l’amour,” which earned Sabine Timoteo the Best Actress Award in Locarno.
His greatest success came in 2005 with the acclaimed documentary “Into Great Silence,” which became a worldwide audience hit and received numerous awards. In 2013, his drama “The Police Officer’s Wife” won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. With “My Brother’s Name Is Robert and He Is an Idiot” (2018), Gröning was invited to the main competition of the Berlinale for the first time.
Since 2001, Gröning has been teaching at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and is a professor at the ifs International Film School Cologne. He lives and works in Düsseldorf and Berlin.
