René Harder was born in 1971 and grew up in Constance on Lake Constance. After graduating from the Waldorf School Überlingen-Rengoldshausen in 1991, he studied acting and directing at the State Institute in St. Petersburg (Russia), took the acting course "Michael-Tschechov-Studienjahr" in Berlin and completed his studies in Applied Theatre Sciences in Giessen. In 2000 he graduated as a director at the Institute for Theatre, Musical Theatre and Film at the University of Hamburg.

Since 1999 he has worked as a freelance director, author and actor at theatres in Hamburg, Görlitz, Leipzig and Constance, as well as for film and television (ZDF/NDR/arte).

Since 2008 René Harder has been Professor of Acting and Head of the Acting Department at the Alanus University in Alfter (near Bonn). He lives in Hamburg and is the father of five children.
