Jean Ziegler, born in 1934 in Thun, Switzerland, is one of the most renowned critics of global greed for profit and is one of the great idols of the anti-globalisation movement. The pugnacious sociologist is the author of numerous sharp-tongued non-fiction books that have triggered bitter controversy. Most recently, the provocative book of debates "Ändere die Welt!" (Change the World) was published by C. Bertelsmann Verlag, and on March 13, 2017, the publishing house will bring out his new book "Der schmale Grat der Hoffnung" (The Thin Line of Hope).
Jean Ziegler was influenced at a young age by his acquaintance with Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and Che Guevara. He was professor of sociology in Geneva and Paris, member of the Swiss National Council and from 2000 to 2008 UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food. Among other things, his phrase has become famous: "A child who dies of hunger is a murdered child." Jean Ziegler is currently a member of the Advisory Committee of the UN Human Rights Council.
»The Swiss sociologist Jean Ziegler sharply attacks the prey hunters of globalised capital – and calls for a worldwide counter movement from below.« taz
