Director's Commentary
»With this film, I set out in search of the safest place on earth and it takes me to the end of the world. The film focuses on people who want to solve the problem on behalf of all of us – their efforts, their suffering, their struggles, their hopes and their defeats. The protagonist, Charles McCombie, has been involved in the global search for the safest place on earth for 35 years in leading positions and with unbroken optimism. In the film, for which he exclusively opens doors to places that are not accessible to the public, he meets companions and some of his fiercest opponents.
It is a journey through deep layers of collective repression. Shooting our own images of the material that threatens us was one of the most difficult undertakings of this journey. In my struggle for transparency, my insight grew that the safest place can only be found where we as a collective succeed in not becoming believers, but in questioning assertions that are hastily presented as the last scientific truths.«
