Documentary film about the persecution and ostracism of homosexuals in Nazi Germany
A closely guarded family secret is revealed – a taboo broken. Willi Heckmann, born in 1897, was a solo entertainer, lyrical tenor – and gay. When filmmaker Klaus Stanjek learns that his favourite uncle Willi was interned in a concentration camp for eight years because of his sexual orientation, a family façade suddenly collapses. A poignant search for clues emerges from the fog of memory. Documentary design tools meet animation and compositing.
A deeply moving and award-winning documentary about the persecution and ostracism of homosexuals in Nazi Germany and the post-war period, which makes visible the dynamics of distorting and suppressing the truth in German families.
