Born in Duisburg in 1984, grew up in Düsseldorf. After graduating from high school he worked as assistant director at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus and as editor and animator in Hamburg. He studied media art and film directing at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, where he made a number of feature films, animation films and documentaries that were shown at numerous international festivals and broadcast on German TV.

After completing his studies, he shot his first feature-length documentary "Original Copy" in Mumbai, India. The film had its world premiere at the Hot Docs Film Festival in Toronto in 2015, was shown at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and had its German theatrical release in March 2017. From 2016 to 2018 he accompanied a preparatory class in Cologne-Chorweiler for his new cinema documentary "German Class". "German Class" celebrated its world premiere in June 2018 at the Sheffield Doc Fest. Florian Heinzen-Ziob lives and works in Cologne.
