Ma Folie

Austria 2015 / Thriller / Love story / 99 minutes / Director: Andrina Mračnikar / Suitable for 16 years and over

Director's Commentary

»I see "Ma Folie" as a genre film: from a romantic relationship drama, the film tips over into a thriller, and the Lettres filmées have sprinklings that are reminiscent of horror films. Often a change of genre is seen as problematic, in "Ma Folie" the change in theme is justified: Just as the characters change, topple over and finally are different from what you thought they were, the film changes. When the world in which one moves and the truths one believes in begin to crumble, when everything is pervaded by mistrust, jealousy and possible paranoia, fear inevitably arises and with it the thriller.

The themes that run through and determine the film on all levels are questions of truth, lies, representation and deception, right up to distrust of one's own perception. One can see this on a very individual level, but I also see the film in a larger, social context: in an age in which images are omnipresent, can be made by anyone and can also be posted on the Internet at any time, the question of (media) self-portrayal and the representation and reflection of others intensifies. Last but not least, "Ma Folie" is a film about images, about their scope for interpretation and manipulation. Although we have long known about the deceptive power of images, we usually believe that what we see is true. Therefore "Ma Folie" is also a little bit a film about film.«
