Loving film adaption of Christine Nöstlinger's classic children's book
Vienna 1945: The end of the Second World War, seen through the eyes of children. Nine-year-old Christl knows as little about peace as children today know about war. Bombed out and completely penniless, she flees with her family to a noble villa in Neuwaldegg. After the surrender of the Nazis, soldiers of the Red Army take up quarters in the house. Everyone is afraid of the Russians who are considered unpredictable. Only Christl is not. For her the general anarchy is above all a great adventure and in Cohn, the Russian cook, she even finds a real friend.
"Fly Away Home" takes the little heroine's perspective. This is how war must have been, so succinct in everyday life, so piercing in the stomach, so funny, because on a miracle day you were allowed to lick the plate without being scolded. Outstanding: young star Zita Gaier, who combines courage, childlike rebelliousness and curiosity in her role as Christl and provides heartwarming moments.
Generations have grown up with Christine Nöstlinger's novel about her childhood after the war. The Austrian Mirjam Unger has lovingly adapted the children's book classic for the cinema for the first time. "Fly Away Home" is an entertaining and at the same time serious family film, which tells of escape and great need, but also of friendship and humanity in an inhumane time.
