PREMIERE IN BREMEN - WHO REALLY KNOWS WHAT LIFE IS?

The docudrama “Who Knows What Life Is?” received a warm reception at its premiere on August 21 at the Schauburg in Bremen. Director Annelie Boroș and the actors Katharina Stark, Enno Trebs, and Dominique Devenport were in attendance.

In the film discussion that followed with Sophie Anggawi (Bremen Zwei), the focus was on the question of how Paula Modersohn-Becker’s life and work can be portrayed today. “There isn’t just one Paula Modersohn-Becker,” explained Annelie Boroș. The film aims to explore the artist and seek answers, rather than provide a definitive answer to the question of who she was.

Lead actress Katharina Stark described the perspective through which she hopes to present Paula Modersohn-Becker to the audience: “With great curiosity, openness, and perhaps a little less judgment.” The post-screening discussion made it clear just how much Paula Modersohn-Becker continues to inspire new perspectives, debates, and interpretations, even 150 years after her birth.

To mark the 150th anniversary of her birth, “Who Knows What Life Is?” will open in theaters nationwide on September 3, 2026. The anniversary exhibitions dedicated to Paula Modersohn-Becker in Bremen and Worpswede have been extended through November 1, 2026, and will thus also coincide with the film’s theatrical release. On September 3, the film will celebrate its Munich premiere at the Rio Filmpalast. Following the premiere, director Annelie Boroș will embark on a theater tour to Berlin, Leipzig, Hamburg, and Oldenburg.
