The Prodigal Sister

Germany 2015 / Drama / 97 minutes / Director: Dennis Todorović / Universal

Director's Commentary

»"The Prodigal Sister" is a very personal film for me. The question of faith and the topic of amnesia were for me the trigger and the driving force of the story, both of which I know from my own life and from my closest family circle. In the end, however, it is the sister conflict between Martha and Helene that makes "The Prodigal Sister" universal and makes the film what it is: How far can I tolerate my neighbour, even if I don't agree with his path? The mixture of tragedy and humour is especially important to me. It is a really hard, existential story, but there is also a lot of comedy – especially because of the absurdity of an amnesiac in a monastery.

The actresses complement each other incredibly well as a contrasting pair of sisters. On the one hand Lisa Martinek, an incredibly creative actress with a sure sense of the human in every moment, and on the other hand Željka Preksavec, who with an impressive precision, thoughtful and sensitive, gives her often so strict role Martha a deep inner warmth. For me as a director this is a real gift.«
