Lost Ones

Germany 2018 / Drama / 91 minutes / Director: Felix Hassenfratz / Suitable for 16 years and over

Rated Especially Worthwhile

Film Evaluation Authority's (FBW) assessment of the film

»With its strong actors and its drastic and explosive theme "Lost Ones" gets under your skin. The scenes are staged by director Felix Hassenfratz in a chamber play-like and minimalist manner and authentically located in the provincial milieu. What is effective are the looks and gestures of the characters – and thus also the convincingly acting ensemble of actors, including Enno Trebs as Maria's first real love and Clemens Schick, who as an abusive father can fully play out the ambivalence between protector and abuser.

The film is supported by Anna Bachmann and Maria Dragus as Hannah and Maria. You can feel the close familiarity of the two sisters, who seem not only blood- but also soulmates and can only get through the deep distress of their almost hopeless situation together. Hassenfratz expresses the horrible, drastic and violent nature of the situation not in what he shows, but in what he allows us to sense through the atmospheric density of the images. This makes "Lost Ones" a strong drama that courageously confronts its difficult and highly explosive theme.«
