Kirsi Marie Liimatainen

Kirsi Marie Liimatainen was born in Finland in 1968 and now lives in Berlin. With her current documentary "Comrade, Where Are You Today?" the filmmaker delves into her own past, when she left her home country at the age of twenty to study the teachings of Marx and Lenin at the FDJ "Wilhelm Pieck" Youth Academy in the GDR.

After the end of the academic year in the summer of 1989, however, Kirsi herself did not become an official of a left-wing youth organisation. She first studied acting at the University of Tampere in Finland and then worked as an actress in theatre, film and television. In 1999, she returned to Germany, this time to study directing at the Film Academy HFF Konrad Wolf in Potsdam-Babelsberg.

"Modlicha" (2001), "Frühlingshymne" (2002) and her diploma film "Sonja" (2006) were screened successfully at festivals worldwide. Most recently, she attracted attention to the topic of domestic violence with the sensitive feature film "Festung" (2011). Her other works include the TV series "Alavilla mailla hallanvaara" (2010) and the project "The Scream of the Butterfly" (in pre-production).
