Manuela Bastian was born in Munich in 1987 and grew up not far from there, at the Ammersee. After a three-month trip to India, she did a six-month internship at the Munich documentary film production company Filmkraft in 2008. Afterwards she studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 2009 to 2011. In 2011 she travelled again to India to shoot her first film "Kampf in Pink". A 60-minute documentary film about the Indian Sampat Pal, charismatic founder of the "Gulabi Gang". A group of Indian women dressed in pink saris who fight for women's rights and against social injustice.

From 2012 Manuela Bastian will study directing at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg in the documentary film course. During her studies she shot her first full-length feature documentary film "Where to, Miss?", for which she won the Granite Documentary Film Prize at the Hof International Film Festival 2015 and the German Human Rights Film Award 2016 in the Hochschule category, which is awarded on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day on December 10.
